Recent discussions involving government officials and the Samsung SDI plant in Göd reveal a troubling trend of evasion concerning serious environmental concerns. Erdélyi Katalin, deputy editor-in-chief of Átlátszó, addressed these issues during a conversation on Klubrádió, highlighting the responses from various government representatives who have consistently dismissed inquiries regarding accusations of environmental violations, workplace safety issues, and the health concerns of employees.
In the dialogue, Erdélyi specifically noted that secretaries of state, including Koncz Zsófia and Menczer Tamás, have repeatedly provided vague, non-committal answers to written questions posed by opposition members of the National Assembly since the beginning of the current Orbán administration. This avoidance of substantial discourse has been particularly evident in the context of serious allegations such as the presence of toxic solvents in Göd’s water supply, and the absence of necessary environmental permits for the factory’s operations.
Since May 2022, nearly 60 letters have been compiled from parliament that were submitted by opposition representatives directed at various ministers and the Prosecutor General regarding the factory’s activities. Notably, Prime Minister Orbán and his cabinet members have opted not to respond directly, relegating this responsibility to lower-ranking officials.
Despite persistent questioning regarding critical topics such as the health risks posed by the Samsung SDI factory, past environmental permit issues, and the alarming reports of workplace incidents, government responses have largely been comprised of generic, uninspired letters that fail to address the substance of these inquiries. The complete unavailability of straightforward answers has been criticized as a blatant disregard for accountability.
Additionally, in a separate segment of the same broadcast, Erdélyi highlighted the limited financial assistance the government has allocated for helping severely disabled individuals purchase vehicles. A recent scheme announced by the government offered a total of 476.5 million forints for this purpose. However, with 335 applicants seeking nearly 2 billion forints in support, the overwhelming demand exposed a shortage in resources, as only 88 individuals received assistance from the government, reflecting a fourfold excess in applications over available funding.
These discussions reveal a pattern of neglect and inadequate governmental support for both environmental safety and vulnerable populations, raising significant questions about the priorities of the current administration in addressing pressing societal issues.
